Biathlon has a long tradition in Ruhpolding going back to the sixties, when the German national team trained here. Barely 20 years later, the first World Championship was held in Ruhpolding and 83 athletes from 23 countries created a certain World Championship flair. From then on, the annual World Cup the annual number of participants as well as the number of spectators along with themedia’s interest. By 1985, when the second World Championship was held in Ruhpolding, there were 30,000 spectators on three race days in the Arena at the foot of the Zirmberg. The World Championships held in the new stadium built in 1996 marked a leap forward. Many people will remember the stars such as Uschi Disl or Ricco Groß fondly! Ruhpolding experiences Biathlon anew every year and so it only made sense to continue the success true to the slogan “We’re friends for ever – we are one family” in the 2012 World Championships. At that time, Magdalena Neuner retired after winning four medals in front of approximately 240,000 spectators!

When the snow finally melts in the spring, an entirely new colorful landscape emerges inviting you to hike, bike and relax. Now is the time to discover the many mountain peaks on foot or by mountain bike, and the time to enjoy a delicious light meal at one of the charming mountain huts. Everyone will find a favorite tour! The lakes, sometimes referred to as “little Canada” offer a welcome opportunity to cool off. In addition to their love of nature, the people of Ruhpolding preserve their traditions.
