(Planegg/Ruhpolding) Next year, the Summer Biathlon World Championships will take place in Ruhpolding. The competition for the gold, silver and bronze will hit the asphalt at the Chiemgau Arena between August 19th and 23rd, 2020.
“We are happy that Ruhpolding will host the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships next year,” said Dr. Franz Steinle, the German Ski Federation president. “All our trainers have already stated that they want to have as many as top athletes as possible starting at this unusual home-based World Championship competition. Biathlon-fans can start looking forward to intense and exciting races in a summery atmosphere at the Chiemgau Arena."
Originally, the summer biathlon World Championships were going to take place in Kontiolahti, Finland. However, since the summer World Championships would have been the third large-scale biathlon event in Kontiolahti within a year (in addition to the two World Cups in March 2020 and November 2020), the International Biathlon Union and the organizing committee in Kontiolahti agreed to relocate the summer-event.
"We thank the German Ski Federation and especially the Organizers in Ruhpolding who agreed to host the 2020 Summer World Championships at such short notice. I am sure that this will be another wonderful biathlon event in Ruhpolding,” said Olle Dahlin, President of the International Biathlon Union.
Claus Pichler, Ruhpolding’s mayor and head of the Organizational Committee, said, “Ruhpolding has always been a pioneer when it comes to carrying out large-scale biathlon events. The Chiemgau Arena is also an ideal venue for Summer World Championships, and we are looking forward to exciting races with Biathlon’s world elite in August 2020; the same month that the Ruhpolding Ski Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary.”
